The Mi-26, developed at the Mil Design Bureau in the late 1970s, is the largest and heaviest serial production helicopter. Its production is established at the Rostvertol plant, part of the Russian Helicopters holding company. More than 300 aircraft have been produced. The Mi-26 can carry up to 20 tonnes of weight in its cargo compartment or on an external sling. These unique characteristics allow it to be used for both military and civilian purposes, from polar latitudes to the equator. The helicopter is actively used in Russia and internationally.
